Harikatha
History of Harikatha
Storytelling has been a powerful tool since ancient times—first seen as cave paintings, like South Africa’s Bushman Art, and later evolving into oral traditions as language developed. Over the ages, it transformed into rich art forms such as music, drama, and dance.
Harikatha, meaning “the story of Lord Hari (Vishnu),” is one such form—an ancient blend of narration, song, and performance drawn from the epics and Puranas. Performed by a solo narrator (Bhagavatar or Haridasaru) with musical support, Harikatha brings spiritual teachings to life through engaging and relatable storytelling.
Traditionally presented in temples and during festivals, Harikatha was a way to share culture, values, and inner truths—helping people reflect on life’s deeper meanings through stories of divine heroes, saints, and sacred history.
Relevance of Harikatha Today
There is no doubt that even to this day, this ancient form of storytelling is relevant and is of importance; particularly to those who are seeking answers to questions such as:
- Who am I?
- Where did I come from?
- Where am I going to?
- How do I get there?
For the Foundation, the Harikatha is not just a medium to engage and entertain through the narration of stories from scripture; it is also an effective way to impart learning and transmission of ideas and ideals from the ancient scriptures and great epics. These stories glorify divine qualities, inspire spiritual growth and are considered a remedy for worldly suffering. They are seen as essential for cultivating Bhakti (devotion).
The Harikatha aims to instil truth and righteousness in people’s minds, and to sow the seeds of devotion and facilitate spiritual growth. The Foundation aims to share these stories, in a loving context, to nourish the listener’s heart and mind, elevating their understanding of spirituality.
